My Process

Creating a Legacy Collection to tell a family history is such an important thing to do, so I thought I better get started on my own. I decided that I would document the journey and share short videos of my process as I went through it step-by-step.

I am starting where everyone else does: collecting and organizing my digital images and videos, analog film, and print photos, finding and researching records and anything else that will help tell the story. The goal is to create a special collection of these items that I can then use to create a number of videos, print products and other methods of portraying my family’s visual history.

I will also be exploring the best ways to preserve them as well as ensuring they can be easily shared and passed down to future family members.

The first step in creating my Legacy Collection is to organize my digital photo library and to do that I have to collect all the images and video files in one place. I am starting the process by copying all those files over to a brand new external hard drive I got specifically to collect and organize these digital image files.

Ok, I have to admit it, I’ve been procrastinating. In the last few months I’ve been talking about getting started with my Legacy Project, but alas, I just haven’t made the progress I intended.
 
My clients have been telling me for years about how hard it is to get started on big organizing projects and how easy it is to procrastinate, in fact, that’s actually why they usually end up hiring me. So now I officially get it, it’s very different when it’s your own stuff.

I thought it would be a good way to start things off and begin to give you an idea of some of the things you can do and how to start preparing.
